Through my company I assist individuals as they navigate their career paths, but I can also personally relate to the trepidations they often feel about changing jobs and industries. Any career transition can provoke anxiety, and making the change from working in the Academy to outside of it, or from a tenure-track professor path to an “alt-ac” path, can be particularly stressful and emotionally trying.
If you are in a Ph.D. program or have a Ph.D. and are contemplating “leaving the ivory tower,” you might find my PODCAST interview for PhD Career Guide useful. During graduate school, I simultaneously prepared for the tenure-track route and explored all of my options. By the time I defended my dissertation, I had both clarity on what I wanted professionally and ample experience to launch my business and obtain success rather quickly.
Although the intended audience of PhD Career Guide is doctoral students or Ph.D. holders, anyone considering a career change and thinking about preparing for that change might find a nugget or two of usefulness in my interview. At least for me, flexibility, open-mindedness, diligent preparation, and networking were all keys to my career success. I wish all of my readers the best of luck as you work toward your next career goal!
